In an era of climate change and rapid population growth, the way we produce food has never been more critical. Sustainable agriculture, a farming approach that focuses on producing food in a way that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, offers a solution that balances the need to feed the world with the imperative to protect our environment. At The Harvest Fund, we've seen firsthand how sustainable agriculture can transform lives, particularly for women farmers in Zambia, and contribute to the preservation of our planet.

One of the key ways we practice sustainable agriculture is by ensuring that the women farmers we work with have a healthy environment. This includes providing access to clean water sources, promoting conservation agriculture, and offering training on natural pest control methods.
Why Nutrition Matters: Beyond a Full Belly

What does “nutrition” really mean?

Did you know that even if someone has a full belly, they might still be lacking important nutrients? “Nutrition is the process of consuming, absorbing, and using nutrients from food that are necessary for growth, development, and maintenance of life” (NIEHS). When we eat, our food breaks down into macronutrients — like proteins, fats, and carbohydrates — which give us energy and help our bodies grow strong. It also gives us micronutrients — vitamins and minerals — which keep our body working properly and protect us from getting sick. Our bodies need different amounts of each nutrient, so it is important to eat a variety of foods to get all of the essential nutrients.

Why nutrition matters for everyone

Proper nutrition is important because nutrition affects every aspect of our lives, from our immune system, to our ability to work and learn. In Zambia, children are affected by malnutrition, with 32% of children under five being stunted (short height for age). This affects not just height, but also brain function, school performance, and long-term potential. Nutrition is important at all life stages, but especially during pregnancy and in children....Read More

Climate Change is Making Farming Harder for Zambian Women. What Can We Do?

Climate change has significantly impacted rainfall in Zambia: the rainy season has become shorter, droughts have become more frequent, and rainfall patterns have become less predictable. In a country where 60% of the population is reliant on agriculture as a source of income, the impact of more dry, extreme, and unpredictable weather conditions in Zambia could be catastrophic, increasing food insecurity and poverty. Since small-scale Zambian farmers traditionally have relied on rainfall to water their crops, they are particularly vulnerable to changing weather patterns. Shorter rainy seasons have forced some farmers to plant varieties of crops that will be able to more quickly mature during the brief few months of rainfall. These varieties may produce lower yields, however, increasing food insecurity and hampering farmers’ ability to gain enough income to provide for themselves and their families.

As human activity continues to drive climate change, these problems will only get worse, and vulnerable communities including Zambian subsistence farmers will continue to bear the brunt of the impacts of carbon emissions mostly released by wealthier countries. In fact, climate change may decrease the availability of water in Zambia by as much as <a href="https://unfccc.int/sites/default/files/resource/Third%20National%20Communication%20-%20Zambia.pdf"...Read More

Rural Africa is Powering Environmental Sustainability

Daily life for small-scale women farmers in rural Zambia consists of an exhausting routine. Picture this: a Zambian woman and child are watering fields of crops every single day. With this image in your mind, how do you suppose they are completing this necessary task? It is not with advanced technology as you may initially think, but with buckets. This method is time consuming and physically exhausting, but there are alternatives: a solar-powered water pump can alleviate the burden of this chore.

How does this technology work? It’s simple: the solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, which is then directed towards a water pump that will draw water from a connected source. This sustainably-powered system allows crops to be irrigated year-round, regardless of weather conditions.

At The Harvest Fund, we are hands-on in helping women farmers in Zambia. We have seen how difficult it is for them to truly thrive when manual labor takes up so much of their day, and they have to tend to crops, cook, and care for their families without access to electricity or running water. Surviving on limited resources in a sub-tropical climate that is arid most of the year limits their freedom. With this new technology, time spent carrying water buckets from a faraway source, typically a manually dug well or stream, can be redirected...Read More

The Spirit of Gift-Giving: Reflections on a Memorable Gift

As the season of giving approaches, many of us ponder the significance of the gifts we exchange. For most, the holiday gifts that come to mind are toys, gadgets, or carefully curated gift baskets. However, reflecting on our experiences, we can say that the most memorable gift we’ve received was a live chicken. Yes, you read that right—a live chicken!

If you've had the opportunity to visit a rural farming community in Zambia or beyond, you'll notice the generosity of the locals and the profound meaning behind their gifts.

In many of these communities, gifts of livestock, such as a chicken, goat, or even a cow, are not merely gestures of friendship or hospitality. They are tangible assets that hold significant value. A live chicken can produce eggs, providing a family with a sustainable source of protein and a means of generating income. This can help parents purchase essentials like school uniforms or basic food supplies for their children. In such contexts, receiving a gift like this becomes a huge deal—it's a symbol of trust, community, and shared prosperity.

Receiving a gift of such value can incite mixed emotions. We often find ourselves grappling with feelings of guilt, knowing that our needs are readily met, while the giver may have been sacrificing something significant from their limited resources. Yet, we firmly believe that the true spirit of gift-giving transcends material possessions; it’s about connection, compassion, and recognizing our shared humanity.

In the spirit of the season, while we might be selecting gifts for friends and family, there is an opportunity to think about giving back...Read More

Here we introduce agro-processing, the process of converting raw agricultural products (e.g. crops or milk) into packaged goods. This can play a crucial role in reducing food loss caused by climate change, as processing and preserving these products can elongate the lifespan of food that would otherwise spoil as a result of the consequences of climate change.

By processing unsold crops before they spoil, farmers can extend the shelf life...Read More

As we were checking up with one of our partner farmer cooperatives located just outside of Kafue town, we were informed that membership numbers had gone down within the cooperative. When further investigating the cause of this, one of the women still a part of the cooperative tells us that some of the members had been cast out from the group for claims of witchcraft. Cases such as this and other forms of internal conflict can be a common occurrence within these small female-farmer cooperatives, and can hinder the progress and success of these groups and the goals that The Harvest Fund aim to accomplish.

Why Smallscale Farmer Cooperatives are Important

Smallscale women farmers face unique challenges in the agricultural sector, including limited access to resources, lack of training and education, and societal norms that may restrict their participation and decision-making power.

Within the continent of Africa, poverty remains as one of the most pressing challenges of today. While progress has been made in recent decades, millions of people still struggle with extreme poverty, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. However, NGOs, non-profits, and social enterprises across the continent are working hard to tackle this great challenge. At The Harvest Fund, we've chosen to focus our efforts on Zambia, a country where the need is great and the potential for impact is significant.

The state of poverty in Africa

According to the World Bank, sub-Saharan Africa is home to the largest share of people living in extreme poverty globally.
