Sandra had seen one of our open roles via our partner, Taproot Plus. She generously shared her communications talent that she accumulated through decades of valuable nonprofit experience. Since our work is quite technical, Sandra helped us massage our messaging to help us connect with readers like you!
What drew you to The Harvest Fund’s mission?
I learned about The Harvest Fund through Taproot on LinkedIn. Having devoted my career to nonprofit communications it was an instant affinity.
What inspired you the most after learning more about our women farmers? (or share anything that inspired you about our model or approach)
What inspired me the most after learning more about the women farmers you are working with is their determination to do the best they can for their families with whatever resources they have. The resources and knowledge you are introducing them to are having an impact now and will for generations to come.
If you were to be a farmer, what would you grow and why?
If I were a farmer I would grow some kind of flowers—imagine the tulip fields of the Netherlands, for example, gorgeous while growing, and inspiring happiness when harvested, while being an economic engine for the farmer and nation. I’ve also seen the sunflower fields of Bulgaria, grown for their oil. Another cash crop for Bulgaria is roses. If I couldn’t grow flowers I would grow grapes, because I love wine!

You’ve obviously got a knack for writing so share an insider tip with our audience!
Thank you! No matter how invested you become with an organization or a cause, when you’re writing about it, keep in mind the ‘outsider’s’ point of view—what does the stranger need to learn about the organization in order to become a friend? Keeping that perspective helps you avoid jargon and clichés and keep the focus on the people and their stories.
